ACTIVITIES AT THE COVE
Cooking Demonstrations
Once a month, Chef Abby Tankersley uses our commercial kitchen to show young people how to make a fresh meal. She teaches different meals as well as multiple cooking methods. Seven ways to cook ground beef, how to boil pasta, and how to bake desserts are some of things Chef Abby has taught Cove youth.
H.I.I.T Program (High Intensity interval training)
Two nights a week, Baylor University volunteers come to The Cove to teach a H.I.I.T Program, where workout instructors teach various workouts & techniques to get Cove youth physically active. Regular exercise is important for reducing depression and the ongoing stresses of experiencing homelessness while also improving the overall emotional well-being.
Budgeting
The Cove uses an interactive budgeting workbook called, On Your Own Workbook - Navigating the road to independence by JoAnn Jumper to support youth with financial advice. Oftentimes, youth experiencing homelessness work part-time jobs to improve their living situation and Cove staff work with these young people about financial planning and making smart decisions.
forms and documents
At The Cove, teenagers are able to get assistance from Cove staff, interns, and volunteers when filling out various forms and documents such as: job applications, food stamps applications (SNAP), college applications, health insurance such as medicaid/medicare, and more.
Book Club
The Advocacy Center provides 2-3 diverse individuals to lead The Cove’s book club that includes youth, volunteers, and staff. Currently, we are reading Color Outside the Lines edited by Sangu Mandanna, where each individual reads at least a paragraph and at the end there is a brief discussion about the contents of what was read.
Fun activities
The Cove is a safe place for young people to come and just enjoy being a teenager. Oftentimes when experiencing homelessness, life can be very challenging to navigate. At The Cove, we have several fun activities for youth to do just that. We have a basketball goal, an art room, a ping pong table, a Wii, several movies, board games, cards, and other entertaining activities. Check out our Amazon Wishlist for more ways to create positive energy throughout our nurture center.
